ADHD Evaluations & Management

ADHD presents with many symptoms and problems, making it difficult to diagnose. No one blood test or aptitude test can pinpoint ADHD as the main culprit. When assessing a child for ADHD, it is also imperative to rule out any underlying conditions that exacerbate ADHD symptoms.

ADHD stands for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. ADHD sufferers can have a combination of many different symptoms, including:

• Depression

• Anxiety

• Degrees of learning disabilities

• Sleep disorders

Diagnosing ADHD typically involves finding out the child’s behavior in different settings by asking teachers and parents what they have experienced with the child.

The guidelines for diagnosing ADHD are set by the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Using these guidelines creates standard criteria across the nation.

After a diagnosis of ADHD has been made, the treatment plan will depend on the age of the child. Before the age of six, behavior management and parent education are tried before medication is prescribed. The behavior management and counseling prescribed for children up to the age of 12 is different than what is prescribed for adolescents. Medication is typically given over the age of 6, depending on the severity of the ADHD and the success of counseling. Behavioral classroom intervention and school support may also be needed.
