Vision & Hearing Screening

Vision and hearing problems affect many facets of life. If unresolved, they can present lifelong struggles. Not only will these problems affect daily activities but can interfere with many other areas of development, such as learning, speech, and overall communication.

Basic vision and hearing assessments are done during well-child visits. The United States Centers for Disease Control offers specific recommendations about hearing and vision testing. Hearing screening should be done no later than one month of age. If unclear, follow-up testing should be done at three months. The initial full screenings are performed between two and 2-1/2 years of age and annually afterward. These full screenings only take a few minutes yet provide extremely important information.

Establishing how well a child can see and hear before the age of 3 plays a big part in the success of their school experiences. Without good sight and hearing, education is hindered before it has a chance to get started. Some children are in preschool by the age of 4. Imagine how hard it will be to learn colors if you cannot see them properly. Children with sight and hearing problems have been mistakenly considered to have learning disabilities or behavioral issues in the past.
